Principal leadership is crucial in attaining school success since it has a significant influence on teacher performance, student engagement, school growth, and the school’s stakeholder commitment (Alghulayqah, 2022; Bhujel, 2021; Bush & Glover, 2014; Ejaz et al., 2024; Leithwood et al., 2006; Marshall, 2015; Ziduli et al., 2018). Leadership is significant because schools are educational institutions that prepare future leaders. School administrators and their leadership are expected to be more successful and flexible in the face of all obstacles, particularly in the twenty-first century, as the education ecosystem has altered in response to national and global needs. Thus, this chapter will explore school principals’ leadership in rural areas, its importance, and the challenges in implementing it, based on the existing literature.

School Principal Leadership in Rural Areas Leadership is important, including in rural areas. Rural areas are characterized by low population density, limited resources, isolated communities, and agriculture-based businesses. In general, rural schools are educational institutions located in remote, socioeconomically marginalized, and underdeveloped areas (Raspatiningrum et al., 2025). Schools in these areas often face systemic challenges that can hinder sustained 1 performance (Beesley et al., 2010; Guarino et al., 2006; Noori et al., 2023). In Indonesia, rural areas are often located outside urban centers, where schools may serve dispersed populations over vast geographical distances (Ministry of Education and Culture, 2020). In contrast, urban areas are regions surrounding a city where most residents have non-agricultural jobs (Costa et al., 2024). Although schools in urban areas also face similar challenges, they have more resources to mitigate the impact (Beesley et al., 2010; Guarino et al., 2006).
